...well i was debating about putting this in "Politics" or here...I prefer it here, though politics seem to plague the protocol on a daily basis. Fuck, its taken 7 years to get to this day  ...and environmentally we're probably more worse off than ever!
So, just a background:

What is the Kyoto Protocol?
It is a pact agreed by governments at a 1997 U.N. conference in Kyoto, Japan, to reduce the amount of greenhouse gases emitted by developed countries by 5.2 percent of 1990 levels during the five-year period 2008-2012. A total of 141 nations, including the EU have ratified, accepted, approved or assented to the pact, according to U.N. data.

So, it all hinges on what we were up to in 1990 or what scientists/technology tell us we were up to
Im not bashing this protocol, but I am bashing the people behind it and the way it has been organized...all politicians purely interested in making sure they dont lose money/resources and have a surplus of carbon credits...
So, for every 100 people driving SUVs to clearcut forests in 1990...compared to today we only have to reduce this by 5%...so for this protocol to be successful...95 people driving SUVs to clearcut forests would be delightful. What a fucking joke!
Sorry for the rant people..just had to get it out. I honestly cant swear enough about this...i guess it should have gone under "Politics".

peace

Nappy--

I did a report on the kyoto protocol in 2000-- right around the time bush pulled us out of it. A sad thing isn't it? We take up 4% of the world population, but take up 50% of its natural resources, and we cant own up to it and try a proactive approach to protecting our planet.

and Lady...
it completely sickens me that world leaders don't believe that we must live in harmony with nature and live in harmony amongst each other.
USA/Australia dropping out just adds to the mayhem...im surprised GWB didn't sign and use his 'influence' to modify the protocol to his liking. Everyone on Earth was practically begging him to hop on board...Fuck man, Clinton was ready to sign and then GWB took over realizing this...
"Since 1990 - the base year for the Kyoto Protocol - U.S. emissions have grown by an additional 13 percent. In Europe, emissions have only increased by one percent." http://www.ecoiq.com/magazine/opinion/opinion111.html
so he got scared and said..."You know what Earth???" FUCK YOU...I'm taken you down!!!!
man this is brutal...ok i'll stop now - sorry everyone...end rant
...happy kyoto day peeps:D
