View Full Version : Automobile boycott

I love the Earth, the trees, the small plants under my foot, even the cold that bites at my toes on the streets of this small New England town. But sometimes the state of the world gets me down. Too many cars, too much noise, too little effort towards radical change. I don't think I can grow out of that realization and on days like today it hits me hard. I started living at an ecovillage in hopes of finding a more harmonious existence with the natural world and have only foound terrible dysfunctional patterns under the guise of environmental friendliness. Intentions and heart must be there, but where is right practice? I am so lost on days like today. Cars really get me down, so a few years ago I started trying biodiesel and vegetable fuels, but even that just seems like a temporary fix. What I really want is to get back on my feet again, literally. Feel the Earth moving under my steps, hear my breathing instead of the rev of an engine on a busy town street. So, I've been thinking of a six-month automobile boycott while I take to the woods. After having explored many kinds of activism and education, I still think personal revolt through pure rejection of certain destructive modern values is critical, you know. If I had any courage, I'd do a life-long boycott of internal combustion...
Is anyone else feeling the pain? I mean, yeah, the world is beautiful still, and so are we even in all of our misgivings, but there's something dark there too...brooding

natural mystic, i agree w/ you completely! when i walk to the post office, i pass alongside of a highway filled w/ trucks suvs & semis (stinky hog semis)
so i also share a dislike of the automobile. i just got hired at a greenhouse :) but its 45 minutes away. by car. :( biking, let alone walking is not an option but i do try to walk as much as i can. i cant wait for the temperatures to rise b/c then i can walk or ride the 3 miles to my parents house to visit instead of driving. i think if more people in this country would walk or ride a bike instead of driving short distances then everyone would benefit. overweight people could use that to shed pounds, it would reduce traffic, people wouldnt use as much gas, less pollution, etc. however, that is too simple & people are too lazy. grrr  when i go to school, i wont drive anywhere unless i leave the city. maybe i could become a distance biker by then & ride the 100 miles home. wish me luck when i go home for christmas break! :p

peace & love

i agree. cars have there good points like transportation, but the cost to our environment is devistateing. i know there is some alternitive fuel or engine that runs well without polluting the air. the govornment will not show it to us because it will put all of the oil and gas companys out of buisness. all returning to the love of money destroying us.

dose anyone elce think this about the govornment? i truly belive they hide this stuff from us so it dosnt put the big already rich people out of buisness.

anyway
peace and love
