Hey folks :o
I like traveling but never have money so have had to figure out ways to get around for cheap or free. I just got back from California and wanted to share a few cheap ways of moving or lodging out that may help some other shoestring travellers:
Autodriveaway: you drive someone's car and sometimes get some money towards gas. Always depends on what's available. www.autodriveaway.com (no worries, i don't work for em but have done it four times and it works out well, you have to front them a deposit which you get back afterwards).
Attending an open house or visitor's weekend: Some colleges will give you a travel scholarship as a prospective student. I just got $200 to go to an open house for a college in Iowa (plus three meals a day and a comfortable bed for three nights). A good deal
Staying at Ashrams: Like Neem Karoli in Taos, NM. A few dollars a night gets you food and a room and closeness to hot springs
Twelve Tribes: Wheww. A really cool community with houses all over the country and in Europe. You're ALWAYS welcome to stay as a visitor free with meals and a bunk. They don't try to convert you to their religion and are really very kind people. I stayed on their farm in Vista, California for a few nights (the avocadoes and grapefruits were dropping like diamonds all night)
I'd love to hear some other underground travel tips.
Jumping trains in the summer is always fun...
