View Full Version : my shallow question of the day...

I am assuming you call yourself a hippie, or you wouldn't be here. But do you dress like a stereotypical hippie? I was just thinking about this for some reason and thought I'd ask.
I used to dress kind of hippie-ish and then all of a sudden (like 3 weeks ago) I decided I wanted to look different, so I now dress alot more preppy (can't think of a better word) nice skirts; plain, well fitted, tshirts; capris; pointy toe shoes. (No, I didn't go out shopping and get a whole new wardrobe just because I wanted a change, I happened apon a really great yard sale and was able to buy a ton of clothes. Then h gave me a little $$ from the tax return to do as I pleased with.) Maybe it was all the problems w/ h, but I wanted to feel more sexy, so I changed my style and feel pretty good about it. Its just weird cause if you looked at me you wouldn't say "she's a hippie" but if you talked to me, you'd know. So anyway, how do you dress?

People call me a hippy generally because of my long hair... That and all the pot. While I was homeless, my nickname at "The Park" (everyone gets a nickname there) was Hippy. "Hey Hippy", they'd say, "come smoke with us". Or occaisonally, "Hippy, you smell", but I generally pointed out it had more to do with my being homeless than anything... Ah good times, good times.

Oh on topic, I do sort of dress hippy, meaning I wear comfortable clothes. From jargon file, portrait of random j hacker, dress (http://www.catb.org/~esr/jargon/html/dress.html):

Casual, vaguely post-hippie; T-shirts, jeans, running shoes, Birk-enstocks (or bare feet). Long hair, beards, and moustaches are common. High incidence of tie-dye and intellectual or humorous ‘slogan’ T-shirts. Until the mid-1990s such T-shirts were seldom computer-related, as that would have been too obvious — but the hacker culture has since developed its own icons, and J. Random Hacker now often wears a Linux penguin or BSD daemon or a DeCSS protest shirt.
This describes me well (I wear my "Will Hack For Sex" T-Shirt with pride). I am not one for the whole goth/rave thing (the next paragraph if you read the link). I wear a lot of adidas, though, throwback from my soccer-playing days.

We're all individuals! Yes, we're all individuals!

Ya know, it depends on the day. At work, I generally dress in jeans and flannel but sometimes I throw in a Ghandi tee shirt or a tie-die bandanna on my hair....

During the weekend it varies...I do have an awesome pair of cotton drawstring pants that everybody swears is hemp... :p ...

I have a really hard time finding hippie shirts though other than the political slogan ones...

I actually don't wear my Birkenstocks all that much...they seem to bother my arches a little.

I do, I wear long home-made dresses and skirts and apron tops. But, actually, I don't think people think "oh look at that hippie" when I'm out. I used to feel that way and after I had my baby I think people began sticking me in the "mom" catagory, rather than the hippie one.

But, maybe that's not true. Maybe I just identify more with being a mom now, so i project that and other people pick up on it?

Who knows.

Here's what I know:

I dress this way because it's reflective of the way I feel. I feel best in clothes I make myself. But my convictions are not sewn on any of my shirts. I've known a lot of people who dress like me who are certainly not hippies and I've met a lot of people who dress very conservatively who certainly are hippies.

I don't dress like a hippy at all. I love "hippy" clothes but they aren't very flattering on me :o I have to dress "professionally" for my job, but on the weekends I wear jeans and fuzzy sweaters in winter and jeans and fitted t-shirts in warmer weather. I hate wearing shoes and socks and go barefoot whenever I can. I guess I consider myself a "hippy" because of my views more than what I dress like :hippie:

People look at me, see my dreads and without a doubt in their mind, spurt out "HippY!!" even if they don't think I can hear them :smilie_lo

I don't really know how to classify how I dress though. I usually wear hemp or corduroy pants. I kind of surpassed my patchwork stage, and became more plain. Plain sweaters, and sweatshirts some with appliques. I either wear my birkenclogs or my etnies.
And I just do not know how to dress up! As much as I will try, it just doesn't work out for me  !

Right now, in winter, baggy pants, t shirts, flannel shirts, head scarf. A hat when I go outside. I look like a survivalist. But from spring to summer I wear old lady skirts, tank tops, t shirts. And head scarves. Most of my clothes come from the goodwill or free church things, or donations from friends. Some things I make from second hand sheets, or donated material. To my friends I dress hippy. To younger people I dress poor. Try to imagine Poor Amish Trash (trash because of sleeveless tops-gasp). All I know is that I'm comfortable :D

Peace :)

Ok, my boyfriend says I dress "hippy" or "artsy bohemian" or even "like my mom dressed in the sixties" :hippie: I just wear what I feel comfortable in, which like Anna is usually stuff I make myself. I LOVE patchwork. Most of my pants are baggy with patchwork panels. I love apron tops, but on the ones that lace in the back so I can strap my boobies down ( I don't like them flopping around which now they do because of child bearing). When I go to a bar, I usually try to dress relatively "normal" for my boyfriend's sake, but most of the time, there's something patchwork in my outfit, be it a purse, a head scarf or even a top or jeans. I love loose fitting clothes, even though I'm really thin, because I hate feeling confined. I wear clogs (or fuzzy boots when there's snow) in the winter/fall and barefeet whenever or wherever I can, if not, sandals. My hair is usually free and curly or piled atop of my bean with a head wrap from scrap material. I dress my daughter in patchwork that I make, too because everyone always says "Awe, where did you get that?". And I'm so proud to say I made it. I didn't dress this way too much before pregnancy, mostly my views and attitude is what got me labeled as "hippy", well, that and the occassional apron top in the summer. But since my pregnancy days, I just feel alot more comfortable expressing myself this way. Maybe I'm more secure.. I dunno... so yes. I do dress like a hippy. Now lets have a beer and smoke a joint!

i basicly dress for comfort and if the clothing was cheep and i prefer to not buy clothing at big chain stores. i do have a pair of hemp pants that i absolutaly love, and apparently all my friends love too (too bad they are one of a kind and they cant buy them at wal mart). and i am a gymnast so i go barefoot much of the time anyway, but i like walking outside barefoot as much as possible as well.
love and peace

Moonjava those clogs *rock*

Yah I dress like a new school hippie I guess. Meaning I don't wear bellbottoms but I wear patchie clothes. I have been using a lot of hemp lately in my own creations. I like to wear simple stuff too but I love sportin the creativity of myself or someone else who took the time to make a patchwork garment. When I am working (substitute teacher) I have to dress professionally. I still like to wear my comfy birkenstocks with my dress pants!

In my little world the hippie stands for alternative lifestyles, ways of being, peace between people and a lot of loonies.
Not only for being unclean an live on socialsecurity an dress in rags:)

Edit: I forgot about the smoking part guess it doesn´t seems to be that important for me:)
