I do not understand how legislators can justify to themselves...that they are "protecting" marriage, by denying it to couples. What is wrong with encouraging committment?
People bandy about the slogans...homosexuality is a "sin", it is "immoral"...and one of the stereotypes of gay people is that they are promiscuous and spread AIDS.....
So they are PERPETUATING this stereotype by NOT ALLOWING them to publicly commit themselves to each other????
Marriage is a civil contract. If churches don't want to perform same sex weddings, they don't have to. It's their perogative.
But it should not be the perogative of a state government or a federal government to deny its citizens the right to make a civil contract.
My state is going through this right now...

I don't really know how I feel, cuz this issue does'nt affect me. However, based on the points you've made, no I think civil union is good enough. You see, Treehugger gay folk already have committments, thats why they wanna get married. What I think they want is acceptance and equality. And If marriage was a preventative for promiscuity, mommies and daddys would stay together forever and ever. I think that the sanctity of marriage went into the crapper when it became the prize of a game show. I think alot of gay folk today for some reason feel the need to be "zealot/activist and in your face gay". They also need to be as tolerent as they want others to be with them. Most gay people I know just wana do their thing and be left alone. :) :group_hug <<<===gay smillie. haha

I think it was Greg Giraldo that said, "The sanctity of marriage was destroyed when you could go get married in five minutes by Elvis... And divorced right next door." :)

I guess the issues I'm thinking about are survivorship rights...the rights to visit each other in the hospital..making medical decisions for each other...having the rights to visitation of each other's kids (what if they adopt a kid...how would visitation work)...stuff like that.
What rationale can the government have for not encouraging an actual, public, acknowledged committment between two people?

i think that these are the more important issues for sure.
i wish it wasn't looked at so black and white.
gay and straight, right way and wrong way.
(sighs)
i am not gay, but my best friend since i was 4 is
and he knew and went 7 years of pretending and hiding
it tortured him and it was close
he hid it from me for that long, it almost destroyed him
he REALLY thought i wouldn't be his friend anymore
i laughed and cried and hugged him
he had been freed, it was one of the most REAL moments i have ever witnessed, a transformation before your eyes...
i never thought of him as being one way or the other anyway
just him :)
is ones' sexual orientation enough to define the who that you are?
apparently its enough to define what your rights are.... hmmph....

i used to be completely against gay marriage and homosexuality. I guess things change when people you have known nearly your whole life, such as your best friend, come out to you. The impact this event had on me was a complete moral 180. Im completely for gay marriage and see homosexuals as people just like everybody else. As far as making gay marriage illegal, what ever happened to freedom of choice in this country. Don't politicians believe that human beings are able to run their own lives.

We are supposed to have freedom of religion in our country. When government officials say that the bible dictates marriage as a union between a man and a woman and uses these views to determine their choices in this situation, then we suffer from religious oppression.

To me, a "gay" marriage represents more the ideal of a true marriage than a marriage that is just a "union between a man and a woman."
Calling marriage simply a "union between a man and a woman" is incredibly limiting. It suggests that marriage isn't about anything but reproduction and raising children.
Not that those things aren't important...
Or that the legal recognition of family ties isn't important...
Or that anyone is suggesting that men and women shouldn't be united in the holy bonds of matrimony, as they traditionally have been...
But what about love? Trust? Committment? Isn't that what marriage SHOULD be about? And if it's about these things, what difference does the sex of the partners make?
Makes you wonder what the people against gay marriage are so insecure about.

People who are against gay marriage and homosexuality in general think two men sticking their weiners up each others butts is gross. I think that about covers it. All this crap about morals and anything else is excuses; a reason to hate something they've been taught to hate. And it makes them feel good, because it's like society condones this hate, after it has taken away everything else they'd like to hate. Homosexuals are the only social group left that is politicaly correct to hate anymore, aside from all those other groups who just don't matter, like artists, revolutionaries, protesters, and terrorists. In an age where it's becoming illegal for the KKK to demonstrate in hoods, I think we need to quit all this BS of telling people they aren't allowed to hate. Hate and intolerance are probably two of the most primal human emotions; why should we pretend they don't exist? I say everybody go out there and say loud and clear who you hate and why. Then maybe we can quit pretending and get past it...

TOMAN HAS RETURNED!!!!!
oh as far as my opionion on gay marriage goes, I think people should check the marriage/divorce rates, but I guess for rights of a child and survivorship rights I am sure there are ways around all that besides a marraige certificate which will probably go out the door along with the marriage after a few years.
I have a twisted veiw on marriage, I think its over rated but I dont think the government has the right to decide who can and cannot get married, it should be there choice.

I don't care if gay people want to get married. I think another problem is that people think that if gay marriage is legalized or honored, then so should other alternative lifestyles like polygamy and what not. I don't think this is true but well...... the thoughts out there.

There needs to be something changed. My friend, who has a daughter, lived with her Mom. There was a husband but he ran away for a while. They tried to get public housing, the three females, and got told they were NOT a family, therefore they could not get any government help. If my friend didn't live with her Mom, she could of gotten help. My friend's husband showed back up, with his habits and lies, and they let him move back in so they could eat and pay all the bills. Sad ain't it?
Peace,

Actually, anal sex of any kind is still a bit taboo for many people in this country, though it is much less so now adays.
However, it is too about the sodomy, damnit - why? Because these old homophobic white men are arrogant enough to think that some homosexual man would try to stick a penis in their butt if it were legal - of course, we know no homosexual man in their right mind would be at all attracted to any of these men... Going back to some comedian I cannot remember right now, what we need to do is change what these old white men see as gay marriage - we need to get them thinking about all those lovely lesbians that will be making out in bikinis on the front lawn by these old men's summer homes! Not that that is anything what gay marriage is about, but we're just getting them to follow their biggest head, here ;)

Getting fucked in the ass is described as being in hell by many youngsters an prisoners:)
An many do make such remarks in daily speach so the taboos delta refers to is not so common as many believe, the differences between what u say an what u think u say is maybe clouded for many,an is quite usual in younger minds and in stiff older.

You know what's really funny. It's okay for R.kelly to piss on some girl (that's considered somewhat normal) but a guy can have sex with another guy with consent and that's illegal.

I am the "Maid of Honor" in a lesbian wedding this Thursday. The marrage will not be recognized by the state which is a shame. These two beautiful women have been committed to each other for 11 years on Thursday. So why are they denide the right to have family insurance or make spousal decision in emergency situations? These are the types of issues that gay couples want equality on.

this is what bugs me the most "the state does not recognize" but we are the state we make the rules by voting, the only people who can change that is the feds and we own them also! In California the just made our own rules and if people did not like them they were asked is this a life or death decision? and Does this regard your life? If the answer is no to both them STFU! :p
In my opinion People are people and marriage sucks but if you want to do that it's you body and it's you life, and if anyone thinks gay marriage is bad then what do you think about Americans making and buying porno with 15 year old girls from the check republic in it? And once again it's your body and your life, but it is a Man's world!
