Let me preface this with an explanation. This was written a few years ago for a friends birthday... a few of us put together a book of short stories, poems, etc for him. He and I used to drink in the same pub together, and we'd often play silly games... like find a random object before you could sit back down... sometimes I would leave heads up pennies on the back of the toilet for him to find... just a little piece of luck to carry him on his way. Anyway... this was the story I wrote for his birthday. Enjoy...
All the familiar faces, now with strangers eyes. I still came to my old home pub, hoping to find what the past has known. "Seat taken..." she says with an expected bitter tone.
Pint in hand, I take my seat... well used to be mine, now occupied by her angst. "How are things?" I say to the bartender, James.
"It's been a while old friend, things have all changed. Hell, I thought you were gone... gone and gotten engaged... don't you have twins on the way?"
I took a contemplating sip before giving a confused grin. "TWINS?? ENGAGED??? Where the fuck did you hear such things!?"
"It's been all around that you've settled down..."
"Settled for less..." she mutters loud enough for only my ear. Obviously neither have a clue of what, nor of who.
"All these things you've heard and accepted to be true, are nothing more than speculation of misheard conversations. You see my friend, I've had the fortune of the the shiny penny... I have gone, gone and enhanced some things... met a golden girl, there's been talk of some plans... but, not that damn many!"
I'd hoped to find more here than beer... share a laugh, and talk about the fun we had that year. But, it's still all the same, rumors and lies and flames... I've given this place all I can, but I'll take with me all those memories, and this time I'll be keeping all of my pennies.
