"I guess it's not that I don't like them as people. I just don't care. I don't know them. They don't come to my home and eat with me. In a way, they don't exist. Just thier art exists."

This is the way my friend Logan is. She works with them every day and they just don't phase her at all. Me? I'm like a 13 year old fanatic nut!
:love-smil

I love your post about cleaning. I read it to my husband, who has also taken to reading a bit of your blog.

He had a vested interest, as he just prosecuted this poor family who had too many chickens on too small a plot of land. The man who owned them brought his little girl to court and she cried the whole time. She'll probably be having nightmares about my husband for the rest of her life.

They were somebodies neighbor's, but not ours. My husband isn't a crazy chicken hater or anything, it's just his job. I don't know how many chickens they had, but they did live in a suburban neighborhood and were keeping the chickens in a shed. They gave the eggs to their neighbors and used their poop as manure for their lawn and garden.

Seems fine to me... but unfortunately, it was illegal. The neighbors complained about both the sound and the smell of them.

The dad said that he was teaching his children responsibility by raising the chickens from chicks to adulthood and giving them the task of caring for the chickens. That seems wonderful. I'm sorry he had to give them up. My husband might have been able to work with the situtaion had there not been so many complaints. :(

Oh, ok, I see. Yes, most suburbs don't allow livestock. Some of the further out ones do, but with a regular sized yard you're going to have problems with more than three or four.

Sad, though, I bet that dad felt awful for his daughter.

Cassandra

Re-thought the freezer. Don't think so. It's old, it's huge, it has to be defrosted. Where would I put everything when it needs defrosting?

Pedata, if you aren't going to be opening that freezer that often..if you're going to use it for long term storage and open it say three times a week, quickly...I would seriously, seriously, get a non-defrosting freezer.

Frost-free freezers use about four times the electricity as a regular one. The heating elements kick on i think like six times per day and it's very, very expensive, electrically.

If you keep that freezer outside, you can put the food into coolers and, unplug the freezer and hose it out. It'll melt the ice really, really fast. If you do it every month or so, it'll go really fast...say a half hour? Your food won't thaw in that time.

My next refrigerator is DEFINITELY not going to be frost-free.

Something to think about if you want to save some money.

Chest freezers are more efficient too because when you open the door the cold air stays in as opposed to an upright, where when you open the door, all the cold air falls out.

Those old monsters are actually pretty decent freezers.

Plus, your food will freezerburn a lot faster in a frost free freezer.

The only time a frost-free system is really worth the money is, in a refrigerator/freezer combination, especially in a situation where it's going to be opened a lot.

Frost only forms when warm air is introduced. The more it's closed, the less frost there will be anyway.

Make sure the door gaskets are really good. Take a dollar bill and slip it around the door. If it moves really easily in a spot, check the gasket for little splits or stuck on food and stuff.

Another money saving tip for a freezer...for conserving electricity...if you get a freezer that has an EXTERNAL condensor coil (on the back of it)...you can even add some insulation to the outside of the freezer. Don't cover up that condensor coil. Also, DON'T do this if you can't find a condensor coil..some are built in the body and if people insulate over that, the freezer can't lose it's heat and it'll eventually die. It stresses the compressor too much.

Keep the warm coils cleaned, if they're on the back or underneath. Even a 1/16th inch thick layer of dust on them can cut efficiency by 1/4 or more.

Just a bit of information from somebody "in the know"..

I did say something about the old man and the sea, about him dreaming of lions, or how he would. But I can't remember what I was talking about then, lol.

Thor is my husband.
