I have never smoked herb before but i want to try it. I don't want to abuse it and smoke every waking moment. I want to save it for special occassions with friends and for times when i'm really stressed out or something. Can anyone tell me if there's a way to handle weed responsibly and to not get "addicted" to it? I don't want to end up smoking everyday. Not to offend anyone that does, but it's just not my style. Can someone lend some advice?

Marijuana is not addictive. I think you misunderstand what it's all about; it's not like having a few drinks or something, where you start drinking more and more all the time, you have a shitty day and go get hammered to forget about it, and it's not like crack or something that you're hooked on. Granted, it can be mentally habit forming, but not really any more than say, soda. Even if you do start smoking on a regular basis, you don't really build up a tolerance to it, and it doesn't interfere with your regular life like drugs and alcohol do. The most productive and positive years of my life have been surrounded in a cloud of smoke. One important aspect too is to not smoke low quality herb. It's just not worth it. But if you live in any kind of a large city you shouldn't have a problem finding good smoke. Have fun!

How old are you dove?
The reason I ask is so I can give you better advice
If you're young I'm sure there's not a lot of people around you that are going to use it properly. If this is just a teen delinquence or a rebellion type of thing I would say don't do it.
If you have people around you that do smoke and have GOOD advice and can lead you to a good experience then I would say give it a try. There are people who abuse it and there are people that glorify it and make it into something bad. Make sure you know why you're using and make sure it's not for bad motives.

According to Dove's profile, she's twenty. As a matter of fact her birthday is only three days away from mine!
I'm sure you're mature enough that it's not a delinquent or rebellious thing. Weed can be enlightening. It's not like alcohol in that sense.
It's not habit forming in the same way as cigarettes. Cigarettes are habit forming because the nicotine "high" starts fading as soon as you're done smoking.
With weed, the high lasts an hour or so, depending on quality. It's totally not habit forming. I find beer to be more habit forming than weed...and, no I'm not an alcoholic. I just like beer too much, if that makes any sense at all.
Some people do mix weed in with tobacco in joints. I say, if you're not already a cigarette smoker, DON'T do this. It'll get you addicted to the tobacco!
Get yerself a water pipe. Try just one hit at first, relax and see what it does. Wait about fifteen minutes or so before another hit.
Hope this helps..
Kath
Thanx, guys! Yea, I actually took a whole other view on weed after i read toman's post on it from the old forum, and now i have a positive outlook on it. Yes, I'm twenty, and there is no rebellious intentions for me, lol. I want to try it to become more enlightened and to be able to open up my mind and relax. Thanks for all the advice. :hippie:

okay ready haha i made a list for myself a while back, don't know if it will help or anything but i sort of set rules for myself with it
don't smoke if you are in anyway depressed, worried, stressed-out, or angry. if you do there's a larger chance of becoming addicted because you will view the herb as a curing mechanism and it will become an unhealthy cycle.
2. know what you want from weed before you smoke it. if you want it to get out of your head if you're depressed, or worried, or negative-elses, you should be aware that you should not smoke right now to avoid..etc.
3.never smoke more than 2 days in a row
i could go on but i know i'm making some people frustrated and probably angry with me right now. But before you tell me all your defenses, this list was for me, not for everyone. and i do know people addicted to weed, maybe not physically, but definitely mental dependence.
okay i guess i'm ready for the backlash now.
Peace

Sounds like sensible advice to keep it "in moderation". Smoking while depressed or as an avoidance mechanism sure seems to me to be not cool.
I just use it to relax and enhance the end of my day. I do sometimes smoke two days in a row but I make it a point never to smoke three days in a row.
Whatever rules you can live with and that you can feel at peace with, are the right rules for you!

Yeah, whatever floats your boat, just experiment. I'd say don't worry about smoking too much or anything, because you're not going to become actually addicted. When I'm in a smoking mode, I'll smoke every day (sometimes all day... :) ) for months or years, then I'll take a break for months or years. It just goes in cycles for me. But don't be afraid of becoming a junkie or something, because it just doesn't happen. At least not that I've seen. :bandit:

PeaceAmen, Sister!!! That is some great advice!
No one ever starts smoking with a plan to get addicted.
If you really like it and want to do it often- you're probably getting addicted.
Moonjava, I'm so glad you said that :D I was wanting to say something and you said it for me, lol.
Dove, if you're going to smoke all I can say is don't do it the first time around people you don't know and don't do it alone. Best to be around someone you feel comfortable with :)

Cassandra

Thanx for the advice. Wow, i'm glad that i read moonjava's reply because i thought maybe it would be a good idea to smoke if i was feeling depressed. I steer away from that, now. I want to try brownies first, because I don't know if i want to SMOKE it just yet.
Ok, so now i have another question. How do you maintain a healthy weight if you have the munchies everytime you smoke??? I bought some low fat baked lays chips just for that purpose, hehe.

I rarely got the munchies, tho most people only get them in the beginning. Just stay low fat and you should be fine.
I got the giggles a lot tho. People wondered what was so funny.
Peace,
Cassandra

yeah dove i really think it's cool you're asking around a lot for information before you smoke for your first time!! I don't really get the munchies, but my friend does, we have stoned wheat crackers and cheese, or granola bars or hummus with pita chips. it's really what's available to you and how hungry you get.
One of my other friends gained a lot weight, but she also really digs eating so it depends on the individual.
brownies might be kind of hard for you to do, depending on your situation which i don't know. but they have a strong scent i've heard
and btw thank you guys for not attacking me!! heehee

I have to disagree with the idea of not smoking when you're depressed. I've struggled with depression for a long time, and I've always found the herb to help, not hurt. There were years when I couldn't force myself to go to school or work every day, and the herb made those days bearable. As for the weight thing, it's pretty strange becaue I don't know any fat stoners... I know lots of fat drunks; beer makes you swell up like a freakin' balloon. But I've never gained weight when I'm in a weed smokin' routine.

I smoke daily for years, stopped for a few years and just recently have been getting depressed about things and I found my old glass pipe I had stashed away, scraped the hell out of it, ya old resin yum! anyway it helped so much I dont plan on smoking daily again but If I get that feeling I need some kinda healing, it was enlightening actually I havent smoked sober for along time, on occasion Id smoke but I was always drunk and it would just make me really drunk after, but when I smoke this weekend I was outside, everything seemed so clear to me, hard to describe really, it was just very enjoyable!!
:D Is thc already in natural hemp? Or is it something that is put into it and then smoked?
I ask this question because my friends were discussing how if you had hemp carpeting and your house caught on fire, that you'd be too high to get out on time.
But then someone else said that you wouldn't get high because there would be no thc in the hemp carpet.
I know this sounds incredibly studpid and ignorant, but i was just wondering what exactly thc is and how it gets into the weed.

THC is the hallucinogenic/stoner quality natural to weed.
Actual, industrial hemp has very, very low amounts of the THC so you wouldn't get high from a carpet burning.
Regular marijuana plants have been bred for high quantities of THC which is what gets you high.
Hemp doesn't really have enough THC to even be worthwhile.
Kath
So if i were to grow some hemp in my backyard, i wouldn't be able to get a good high from it??? :(

What do hemp and marijuana have in common?
Hemp and marijuana are varieties of the Cannabis sativa plant.
It is illegal to grow both hemp and marijuana in the United States (although it is not illegal to sell or purchase hemp products—hence the hemp bags and dresses you see in store windows).
The two plants have similar aromas when in bloom—however, only one produces an intoxicating effect when smoked.
How are hemp and marijuana different?
Smoking marijuana will make the user high, and smoking hemp will not. Hemp contains less than 1 percent of the active ingredient THC, the substance that gives pot smokers a high. Marijuana plants, on the other hand, contain 10 to 20 percent THC.
Marijuana plants and hemp plants have different appearances and are harvested differently. Marijuana plants tend to be short and bushy, while hemp plants can have stalks that are 25 feet high!
Unlike marijuana, hemp has many uses. Over 25,000 products can be manufactured from hemp, including hair conditioner, diapers, insulation, carpets, paper, and perfume
So no they are not the same plant.
Thanks, libra, for clearing things up for me. Sorry if people are becoming impatient with me. I think i know all that i need to know now. :p

Ever hear the term "smokin' rope"? Good rope used to be made from hemp. Maybe it still is. Either way, they are kinda the same plant, just not really. One will not serve the purpose of the other...

hey this is a cool thread, got a couple thigns to say, first to clear up wot weed is, i did research back when i was starting so i think this stuff is still current. Hemp is actually any plant that has been used historically to make fiborouse things e.g ropes clothes etc. Cannabis is the name of a plant that produces the most usable hemp. Cannabis can also be use in pulp form to make paper or fuel for bruning. the seeds also contains many neutrients including b-vitamins, which are good for the nerves hence the research into cannabis for nerve related illnesses. there are 2 main strains of cannabis: sativa which is better for hemp and grows in coller countries it has a fruity smell and normally a mild high, this plant is normally really tall with thin long leaves. Indica is from hotter climates india middle east and has a higher resin content and is a harsher but normally stronger smoke its is shorter in height and has broader shorter leaves. theres aparently a 3rd europian strain but dont know much bout that. so hempmatter is the stalk and is used for paper clothes etc 0-1%thc; weed is the polenated bud of a cannabis plant which has a medium thc this will contain seeds and be leafy 1-10; and Bud or cronic i think they call it in a america is the unpolenated buds of a female plant. This is a newer form of weed and can have a content of 10-20 % in the newest hybrids. for some reason when the female plant is not polenated the buds or flowers go into a manic growing stage and puff out extreamly they also let out tiny little hairs in the form of thc crystals ( hence why u can only find crystals on bud). thc also comes in 2 solid forms supposedly a sythentic pill can be purchased online i think but i wouldn't, and resin form which has been around for ages and can have the strongest content of thc . In england they have recently moved all marijauna to a c class drug but are thinking of moving bud back up to an A class.
anyways hope that gives people some info on stuff i have to agree with toman on a load of thing weed is not physically adictive, and can actually help u through bad times.
but i'd also say smoking constantly and using a weed as a reliant is a bad thing.
i currently do this and trying change trying to meditate more, i think gear is a brilliant drug coz many peopel who may smoke it when teenage and just being rebelious get effected by it and end up coming on sites like this and learning about spirituality etc which is more important than the comercial world and the escapism it forces us into.
so to dove and anyone else wanting to try weed i would say use it as a sacred plant and dont abuse it coz u will only harm urself other than that its pretty good.
Also smokign for ages althoug hbad in a way allows u to increase ure body tolerance so u can smoek large amounts and get more mentally stoned if u get my meaning also diffrent ways of smoking alow u to get stoned in diffrent ways, as do the diffrent strains of plant and the many diffrent hybrids.
also marijauna is a mexican slang word.
peace out
p.s any information from toman or any more seasoned drug medators would be really cool, mostly on how to control ones self and ideas or drugs methods of meditating u use ?
wow, thanx! I agree that it shouldn't be smoked all the freakin' time. I just heard about this vaporiser thing, it's on a different thread, it's called "Better than smoking." You inhale a mist instead of smoking it. I'm trying to find out more to know if it really is better than smoking it.
