View Full Version : Why is vegetarianism assumed to go along with being a "hippie"?

Every "natural living" forum I go to assumes that if you want to eat healthy/good for the earth, that you'd be a vegetarian?
What about those of us who try to follow healthy tribal eating practices a la Dr. Weston Price? What about those of us who are just trying to eat natural/organic/unprocessed foods, and try to avoid "fake stuff" like a lot of foods marketed to vegetarians are (I'm thinking things like soymilk, soy meat substitutes, and soy/almond/rice cheese substitutes, margarine that still requires flavors & colors to look & taste like butter, etc.)
I know that most vegetarians assert that a veg diet is healthier, but that's not something I believe, especially after researching, and ESPECIALLY being a woman of childbearing age with growing children. Is it necessary for this forum to be a *vegetarian* recipe forum? Couldn't it be a Whole Foods forum instead?

yes they are!!! I have been in the need of new recipes and I am not a vegetarian. So if you have any post away!!!!! :)
as far as the labeling of hippie=vegetarians who cares, labels dont come near me, and never will I am what I am, I love veggies, but I like chicken and other meats, I wear tye dyes and sandals and dress's and all that stuff cause It is the most comfortable way for me. I live the way I live for me, not a lable of me!!

I'm a vegetarian, so naturally, I'm going to think that being one is the best thing ever (those who can't stand being a vegetarian have no business being such, and in my opinon cheat in private...)...
But I was raised on health food, mainly because I was really unhealthy as a child. I was sick all the time, and on antibiotic after antibiotic. So my mom started looking for a better way... That meant organic peanut butter local honey, only antibiotic/hormone-free milk... ya know?
I really benefited from both I think. I'm alot healthier than alot of people with the health problems that I had (heart murmurs, severe allergies, respiration problems, digestion problems, skin allergies, and... ear infections of every sort, I was born prematurely by... alot, and had to be incubated :/).
One magazine that you might like, being a hippie but not vegetarian is: Organic Style. It's TOTALLY awesome!!! They've got great articles, and it's not all vegetarian, but it's generally healthy and earth-friendly! So you might wanna check that out.
One problem I have with just organic-vegetarian stuff (I took a nutrition class, and it's something I enjoy reading about) or "macrobiotic" stuff... is that alot of times there's no "micronutrients" in the food. There's not much nutrition due to the stringent fertilizing stuff. IMO it's much better to just grow your own stuff and put compost over it.
People keep telling me that if you're a vegetarian you need to take like... a million health supplements... I don't really think that's true if you eat right. When I know that I haven't ate enough of something, then I take the vitamin for it, but if I ate enough, I don't eat more... It's a supplement, not something you have to be dependent on! For example, I only take my iron supplement when I haven't ate enough spinach, or something... You don't wanna overdose on stuff, and it's better when you eat the stuff, and not just pop pills... In reality, everyone should take vitamins, and watch their diet more. I think that's a huge reason as to why some vegetarians are healthier than other people ... they watch what they eat instead of just downing another box of HoHos...
Unfortunately, gardenings something I'll get to do in a few weeks :/ I finally got into a college that I'll have to go away to, and I'm pretty sure that I can't rip up the lawn for a tomato plant patch, or garlic, or anything...
I like recipes that are easily convereted between vegetarian and meat eaters... My family isn't vegetarian, and my bf isn't... so it's something that I need!
Soups work best thus far, but I found a good waldorf salad recipe, where you can just add the chicken at the end... :) So that's good, and I'll post it when I find it!

I think the forum is for vegetarian recipies because they're usually healthy food, which I imagine people here are interested in. It's not like there's a shortage of meat recipies on the web. I eat plenty of meat, but I like to make vegetarian food now and then because I like it and it's good for me. Oh well...

Oh good, so I don't have to worry about if my recipes are vegetarian or not? That's great!
I'm completely with you, Chixlet, on the importance of whole foods & hormone/antibiotic free animal products. It's been a fun challenge to find good sources for the things me & my kids need. I can see the differences in my own kids, just based on what they were eating when they were very small (and what I was eating when they were in utero)
