Kan'Nal www.kannal.org offers up some of their tunes free
If you like Guns'n'Roses, I would seek the "heavier" side of tooday's hip music.
again, Warren Haynes/Gov't Mule, newer cheese, maybe Spearhead if you groove with some hip hop, acoustic Michael Franti if not.

for grins and giggles, do a web search for hippy AND music

There's a whole world of music for you, my current favs:

Old and In the Way
Ekoostik Hookah
Addison Groove Project
Yonder Mountain String Band
10 Foot Ganja Plant
John Brown's Body
Iron and Wine

Some bluegrass style bands:

And for that matter why not go for the kinky reggae old style Wailers or Peter Tosh?

Peace

talking modern "hippies" i don't think music's really like..hippie music. but if you're talking what hippies generally listen to, yeah grateful dead's most popular. i really dig psychedelic guitar...my love and god: Hendrix. it just branches out from there, also grunge, alice in chains especially, i'm getting more into that lately.
If you're talking 60s music-search your local library for cds of flower child music! it's awesome! haha it really is..interesting but it can get annoying if you listen to it too many times in a row. like: if you're going to san francisco, be sure to wear flowers in your hair
i think it's so groovy now-friend and lover
etc.
yeahhh..the doors, rolling stones, cream, donovan, leonard cohen, any group off the Woodstock record-check that out, it'll blow your mind.
Peace !

I went from hardcore rock, to some alternative type stuff, then to folk and now I dig a lot of bluegrass.

Sounds like my progression through music, somewhat! ;)

I missed something somewhere, but since when is GnR considered "Hippie" music? Anyway, someone on here opened my eyes to Country Joe. I also enjoy CCR, The Doors, Bob Marley (not exactly "Hippie", but man, what a fanfreakintastic feeling to jam to some old Bob!). But, seriously, listen to what ever touches you, inspires you, makes you feel good, *Hippie* or no.

I must be weird...I just can't get into the bluegrass-sounding stuff. I tend to like New Age stuff....Kay Gardner's "Ocean Moon" album is awesome, IMHO...very ethereal. I think it's great stoner music, easy to get lost in the songs.

In addition to the stuff already mentioned, I would like to humbly suggest the blues - Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughn, BB King, Etta James, Koko Taylor, Coco Montoya, Susan Tedeschi (whom many people like to compare to Janis Joplin)
;)

*The Doors (Morrison Hotel)
*Moe (Wormwood)
*Wilco (Yankee Hotel Foxtrot)
*G Love & Special Sauce (self titled)
*Bob Marley (Natural Mystic)
+ many many more

I don't dig that new age stuff that sounds all electrified. I like a more natural sound. Can you recommend some NA music that is very natural? Am I making sense? I never know how to describe what specifically it is about New Age that I don't like. I like Enigma, I like Enya(overdone, I know), but I would like to find some more music...tranquil, serene, calming. Any ideas? And I'll quit rambling now!

Everyone should own this movie & its kick ass soundtrack!! Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas!!!! Johnny Depp & Benico del Toro are gods in this movie! I can't say enough good things about this movie! The soundtrack has quotes from the movie between songs.

"We had two bags of grass, 75 pounds of mescaline, 5 sheets of high powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a galaxie of multi-color uppers, downers, screamers, laughers, also a quart of rum, a quart of tequelia, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and a dozen amyls."

I haven't seen or heard either in over a month! Scary! :D

Also, check out Blind Melon. They were a band from IN (Shannon Hoon lived in Lafayette about 30 miles from where I do!) who were pretty good. Check out songs "No Rain" & "Galaxie".

Peace & Love

I would suggest a lot of things
Derek Trucks
Dave Matthews
Moe.
Bob Marley
But honestly i would look away from well known music and find some local bands. There are no hippie bands where i am but i went to asheville and found plenty.
