My asparagus is already coming up! Two weeks early and it looks awesome. There's no stalks smaller around than my thumb. And I have fat thumbs, LOL

I just planted it last spring (it looked awesome last year, by the way)...so I can technically pick it *sparingly* this year. But I think I'm going to restrain myself and just let it get good and strong and established.

Then next year I am going to go nuts.

I have some awesome compost. My county has a great composting program...people drop off yard waste and leaves and stuff...and the county composts it. Then in the spring they sell this compost uber cheap.

I got an ENTIRE pickup truck load full of clean, sifted compost for $15.00! And it was a big pickup truck and it was a little overloaded.

I made raised garden beds and, boy is that compost making for some rich soil!

Anyway, I'm pretty stoked to see the asparagus doing so well.

I am jealous! I have been thinking of starting a compost pile. Not sure if Mr. Red would understand. He's not much of a hippie. 15.00 is an awesome price for a truckload of compost!

So, how did you make your raised beds?

Oh compost piles are easy to explain! Just tell him you want to make a big pile in the back yard, all full of dirt and garbage. Then, you're going to let it rot and decompose because it will make new, really good dirt. Who can say no to a brilliant proposition like that? :hippie:

So, how did you make your raised beds?

I cut two inch diameter PVC pipes about two feet long, pounded them into the ground until there was like eight inches sticking out. I did four 4' by 8' rectangles (the pipes were the corners).

Then I took two by eights (treated...and yes, I did some research and determined that the treated stuff wouldn't leach into the dirt..)

Anyway, it took three 8' long two by eights for each bed. I cut one in half to make two 4' long ones. Then I just used the pipes as corner braces and bolted the boards to them.

Then I just filled them with the compost.

Sounds like a good idea to me. I have to wonder, I read no use of domestic animal droppings, but what about rabbit droppings? My rabbit produces a ton of droppings, so would it be bad to put them in the compost? Would it depend on his diet?

I was always under the impression that droppings created by herbivores are okay; droppings by omnivores or carnivores are a no-no.

I don't think I'd put FRESH droppings straight into the garden as it might be too acidic and burn the veggies. But I can't imagine why you couldn't put it into the compost and let it mellow a while...

Rabbit poop is great! Throw lime on it, rake it around, get it all coated. Let it dry out good. Use it in whatever you're growing and watch your vegetation take off.

Or, after it's dried, put some in a jar with water shake it, let it sit a day or so, then use it just like liquid fertilizer.

Dump some fresh on the ground and the worms will come running, lol.

Peace,
Cass
