If you'd like a medieval recipe for a syrup you can add to water to get a more palatable drink, look here: http://www.pbm.com/~lindahl/cariadoc/drinks.html . I'm sure you can find a more healthy sweetener than that listed.

For some years I kept a bottle of sekanjabin and a wooden stirring spoon beside the water barrel at reenactments, it makes water more palatable when you can't keep it cool in summer. Of course, I find heavily watered wine or small beer better still.
