Default Being vegan + living with my dad = HUGE clash

I'm a pretty strict vegan. I never eat/use anything with milk, eggs, or any animal bi-products in it. But recently its been a problem because I've moved in with my dad and he gets pissed off when I buy like te toffu burgers and other meat replacements so for the past month, I've eaten nothing but peanut butter n' jelly, I'm about to go crrraazzyyy! And I don't have the money to go grocery shopping for my own food, and he refuses to buy it for me. . . any suggestions? Thanksss

Check out www.vegweb.com, find recipes you can use with what your dad DOES buy...and maybe turn him on to some good vegan food...might open up his mind a little.

hey...
i think to resolve this clash you have to find out WHY he is being so unsupportive. Is it financial? If so you should try to breakdown the meat versus vegan shopping lists. In many cases its not that big of a comprimise. Sure many of the meatless alternatives are priced way more (basically to protect the beef industry)...BUT, if you're armed with a good protein lesson (thanks for this one pedata!...i was gonna give her the link on "how to steal groceries" )

Or is it a food preparation issue? If this is the case, then you'll have to educate yourself on making some tasty vegan dishes and visit some of the links herbmama provided
...not that pb&j isn't tasty.....mmm....

Rain, sweetie If you combine your grains and legumes you can get protein without needing to go near meat substitutes. But you need to do it from scratch. Don't use canned beans, they are generally pressure cooked. This is not good. Legumes contain an acid that will block your iron intake. The only way to destroy the acid is slow long soaking and slow long cooking.

Also- many meat substitutes are made from soy. Soy, which is a legume, has the same acid. But there's a difference. The acid in soy cannot be destroyed by slow long cooking. Only slow long fermentation will destroy it. Of course then you end up with soy sauce, and other condiments.

If you learn to cook vegetarian, from scratch, your food bill will go down so low that your Dad will probably be thrilled that you're saving his hard earned money (another way to a man's heart). He would probably also be even more thrilled if you did all the cooking and dishwashing. Scratch cooking is time consuming. You will be chained to the stove most days But you will be able to eat like a pig and never get fat And you will eat like a pig, it takes larger portions of protein-making non-meat meals to equal the protein you would get from actual meat. And you do want to have muscles and hair, don't you? lol.

Ok, I could go on forever about this but I'd be writing a book.
