Default Springtime Kitchen Rituals

Hi Kitchen Witches!

Since it's the end of March, I always start thinking of early spring things to start cooking. Also, I love change of season rituals. It's the perfect time to start thinking about the end of this LOOONNNGGG winter and start looking forward to some lovely spring things.

Usually I start planning my herb box and get some vegetable seeds started.
(I can't this year--moving to a new apartment) When it starts to warm up a bit I go on a juice fast. My favorite spring thing to make is sauteed fiddlehead ferns. They are only available for like 2 weeks, but mmmm they're good!! They taste a little like artichokes. I also try to use up some bulk food from canisters and clean them out. I restock with lighter grains and different snacks.

Anyone else have a favorite spring ritual?

I start cooking earlier in the spring. Casseroles and things like that. That way I've got dinner ready for the oven and can spend more time outside as the days get longer.
Lately I've been going through the spring time ritual of chasing insects away- the first sign of spring in the country, lol.

At night, when it's warm enough to keep the windows open I get a bunch of moths on the outside of the screen and I love the way they are nature's little decorations for me to look at while I wash dishes. And then there's the choruses of frogs and katydids singing in the dark.

I have a tomato plant in one window that's survived since November. No flowers yet but it's going outside soon, where I'm sure it's going to be a lot happier.

Ahhh,
Cassandra

I start a potted herb garden on the back porch, usually around this time of year, but it's still too cold here. I love fresh herbs!

Default juice fast?

what's a juice fast? It sounds like a great way to detox your system...

A juice fast is just a system cleansing fast where all you consume is fresh juice and water. I usually do it for 3 days. One day, all green juice (kale, cucumber, celery, parsley with a little ginger), Then add a little fruit and some carrot in for the next two days. I feel sooo good after I do it!! It gets expensive if you don't have a juicer, though. That's the only drawback. I finally broke down and got one--sooo worth it!

Default Sandwich Mode

Unfortunately I live in a second floor apartment and the windows face east and west. It's awesome for seeing the sun rise and set but a bummer for growing things!
What I do is usually end up having a lot of veggie sandwiches. My personal favorite is a Spinach, Green Lettuce, Red Onion, and spicy hummus sandwich. It's also hard to keep me indoors! I walk to work, I walk to the bank, I walk everywhere. During Spring, Summer and Fall, I only have to buy gas one every three to four months unless I travel.
