Natural Remedies for Dry Winter Hair

Honey Hair Treatment DIY

If your hair is starting to feel dry, and you can see the breakage on the end, now is a great time to moisturize your locks with natural ingredients found in your home.

Some of our favorite home hair remedies include:

Honey as a Conditioner:

Brush your hair and remove all tangles. Gently work in 100% pure honey into your hair, starting at the roots. Work in sections to ensure all of your hair is covered with honey. If the honey is too thick to work with gently warm the honey and place on the hair. Cover your hair with a shower cap and wrap a towel around your head. Let the honey sit on your hair for 30 minutes. Remove the towel and shower cap and rinse your hair in the shower with warm water. The honey will effortlessly leave your hair. The honey has left your hair full of shine and bounce.

Serious Hair Repair – Olive Oil:

Warm about 2 tsps. of olive oil. Test the oil’s temperature before applying it to your scalp; the oil should be warm to the touch, but not scalding. Warm oil penetrates more deeply into the hair shaft to repair the damaged cuticles that cause dryness, frizziness and breakage.

Massage the oil into your hair, beginning with your scalp and working your way to the tips of your hair. Do this slowly, as quick jerky motions may just snap already fragile hair.

Wrap your hair in a warm towel and let the oil saturate your hair for up to 30 minutes. Sitting in a steamy bath can increase the oil’s penetration of the hair shaft (resulting in deeper conditioning) and can also prevent messy oil spills around the house. Use warm to cool water to lock in the moisture to your hair.

Honey Hair Shine:

Clean and condition your hair as usual. Combine ¼ teaspoon of honey with 4 cups of warm water. Rinse this solution through your hair and style as usual.

Avocado Hair Treatment for Shiny Hair

This is a hard to make because it’s so hard to sacrafice a tasty (and pricey) avocado do to this. If you have an avocado tree, or can steal some from your neighbors :), then go for it, as it’s well-worth the effor and cost.

In a small bowl, mash and combine:

  • 1 avocado (1/2 for shorter hair)
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 1/2 teaspoon olive oil

Apply to hair and allow to remain 30 minutes or longer, then shampoo and condition as usual.
