Advisory regarding upcoming Coastal Commission Appointments – July 29th

Dear everyone –

In the next week or two, California Speaker of the Assembly Robert Hertzberg will be making four new appointments to the California Coastal Commission. He may appoint new commissioners or he may extend the terms of existing commissioners. These appointments will influence the future of the California Coast into eternity.

Please call the Speaker of the Assembly, the Honorable Robert Hertzberg at 916-319-2040, or email him: Robert Hertzberg < [email protected]> and urge him to choose commissioners who have strong environmental protection advocacy records.

The following talking points are relevant:

– Upon the shoulders of our Coastal Commissioners rest the power to decide whether to protect the coast, including public access to the beach, scenic vistas, wildlife including many endangered species, and coastal phenomenon unique to this area. If these resources are not protected, multi-millionaires and the would-be richer will snatch them up and construct upon them palaces and parking lots which will never go away.

– The California Coastal Commission received the mandate of the voters in the passage of the Coastal Act. Clearly the people of California wish to preserve coastal beauty and habitat for future generations to enjoy.

– 98% of the development projects that come before the Coastal Commissioners recently, have been approved. This is a frightening phenomenon which suggests that the commissioners may be conflicted in their vision of coastal protection. It seems that commissioners, perhaps in an effort to appear unbiased or to support certain political ends, yield to the mentality that certain development is more valuable than coastal protection.

– In recent months the CC has made numerous decisions which favor development over conservation. Refer to Mark Massara’s California-Coastwatcher (April, 2000) e-mail newsletter for details which are spelled out in “Slip Sliding Away,” http://www.tellingthetruth.com/massara2.html

– The forces of development are powerful and well-funded. The forces of coastal protection are only powerful if the Coastal Commissioners stand up for the coast. The notion of balance on such a board is that the board itself is there to balance the pressures from developers. We cannot afford commissioners who are friendly to developers.

The Coastal Commission just did an enormous (and courageous) good turn for Santa Cruz. It’s VERY important this week and next that we ask EVERYONE we know to contact the Speaker in Sacramento to let him know that we care about the coast and want him to appoint strong coastal advocates to the Coastal Commission rather than developer-friendly Commissioners (as he may do, after intense lobbying by developers).

Please, send this email off to other lists and friends throughout California, especially in the L.A. area, because Hertzberg is from L.A./Sherman Oaks. We also want to encourage Mr. Hertzberg [email protected] to conduct interviews, rather than just making political payback appointments.
