I’D LIKE TO BUY THE WORLD A COKE
(If Only They Would Recycle! )
COKE AND RECYCLING
First, some facts on the recycling of plastic bottles:
Containers and packaging materials comprise 1/3 of US municipal
waste. Of this, 1.5 billion pounds is from plastic soda bottles.Recycling rates for plastic soda bottles have declined from 53% in
1994 to 36% in 1997. In 1998, 40% more plastic soda bottles were
discarded than in 1995.
In 1990, Coke pledged to use 25% recycled plastic in the manufacture
of the 10 billion bottles it makes each year. This action would do
wonders to jumpstart the plastic recycling industry. Unfortunately,
Coke is yet to use more than 4% recycled plastic in the US. The irony
is that in Australia (where Coke’s new CEO is from) the company uses
25% recycled content.
