The home has become the focus of a health-conscious design movement that’s separate from—and complementary to—the sustainability movement. Low-tox home design isn’t just about what you don’t bring in; it’s about deliberately choosing materials, finishes, and products that support indoor air quality and reduce chemical exposure. Here’s what’s worth knowing about how home design is changing on this front.
Flooring: Natural Materials Making a Comeback
Vinyl and synthetic carpet have dominated home renovation for decades because they’re inexpensive and durable. They also off-gas—vinyl flooring (particularly sheet vinyl and lower-end LVT) can contain phthalates and sometimes formaldehyde in the adhesives; synthetic carpet retains dust, VOCs, and flame retardants that settle out of the air.
The low-tox alternatives gaining traction: cork (naturally antimicrobial, no synthetic coatings required, soft underfoot), solid hardwood with water-based rather than oil-modified polyurethane finishes (lower VOC during application and after), and wool area rugs (naturally resistant to flame without chemical treatment, good air quality compared to synthetic). Encaustic cement tiles and natural stone are non-toxic by nature if finished with appropriate low-VOC sealers.
Walls and Finishes: Zero-VOC as Default
Wall paint is the most accessible low-tox home upgrade. Conventional paint off-gasses for weeks; zero-VOC formulations (Benjamin Moore Natura, Sherwin-Williams Harmony, ECOS, AFM Safecoat) don’t. They’re widely available at comparable prices and perform equivalently. For any room you’re repainting, this is a no-tradeoff swap.
Wallpaper: avoid PVC-based wallpapers, which off-gas and can’t be composted or easily recycled. Paper-based wallpapers with water-based inks and natural fiber options (grasscloth, jute, wool) are cleaner alternatives. Eicó Paints and Farrow & Ball both use water-based, low-VOC formulas; Schumacher and Phillip Jeffries have natural fiber wallcovering collections.
Furniture: What to Look For
Mass-market furniture is often built from particleboard and MDF (medium-density fiberboard) with urea-formaldehyde adhesives, upholstered in synthetic fabric with chemical flame retardants in the foam. The off-gassing from new furniture is a real indoor air quality concern, particularly in bedrooms and rooms where children spend time.
What to look for: CARB Phase 2 compliant composite wood (the California standard for formaldehyde emissions—look for this on furniture made with any composite wood). Solid wood construction without composite core materials. Flame retardant-free foam (look for “TB 117-2013 compliant” on upholstered furniture—this standard allows furniture to meet fire safety without chemical treatment). GOLS-certified latex or wool-wrapped cushions as alternatives to polyurethane foam.
Used furniture is often the lowest-tox option: it has already off-gassed, typically predates or isn’t subject to current chemical treatments, and costs less. Vintage and secondhand solid wood furniture is consistently better on all of these metrics than new mass-market furniture.
Textiles: Natural Fibers for the Home
Conventional bedding, towels, and curtains are often made from polyester or cotton/polyester blends with chemical finishes—wrinkle-resistance, stain-resistance, and “permanent press” treatments often involve formaldehyde-based compounds. GOTS-certified organic cotton bedding and towels, linen, and wool textiles are processed without these finishing chemicals and certified for the full supply chain.
Coyuchi, Parachute Organic, and SOL Organics are mid-range brands with GOTS certification for bedding. For curtains: undyed natural linen or cotton is cleaner than printed synthetic options; look for OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification, which tests for harmful substances in the final product.
Where to Start
The lowest-hanging fruit: switch to zero-VOC paint for any room you’re currently renovating or repainting. Choose fragrance-free cleaning and laundry products to reduce the chemical residue on fabric surfaces. Ventilate consistently—all the material choices above matter less if the home is tightly sealed with no fresh air exchange.
