Foods to buy at your local Farmer’s Market this Summer

By Brian

Fruits and vegetables are just bursting with flavor right now, and best of all they are all locally sourced (across most parts of the US, Canada and Europe)

Now is a great time to dig out those recipes and take advantage of these fresh foods:

Heirloom Tomatoes: For foodies, this is really the only time of the year to eat tomatoes. Giant lumpy yellow, striped and red tomatoes are great plain, sliced, with a wee bit of salt and pepper.

Early Summer Bounty – Take advantage of these tasty items: Lettuce, Arugula, Swiss Chard, Basil, Green Garlic, Sweet Onions, Soft Squash, Radishes, Strawberries, Blood Oranges, Blackberries

Blackberries Tip – to prevent mold, refrigerate asap and then use immediately.

Lettuce Tip – Wrap paper towels on top and below lettuces, and store in bag in your produce drawer. This will prevent your lettuce from getting soggy and make it last longer.

Sweet Corn – coming out now and will continue through July.

Green beans and pickling cucumbers.

Some areas are already getting a good crop of tomatillos (makes great green salsa!)
