| Sydney, Australia, won its Olympic bid in 1993 in part because the city wanted to do something different: host a Green Games to showcase global environmental responsibility. The Green Games’ Environmental Guidelines call for the “use of CFC-, HFC- and HCFC-free refrigerants”. As a major Olympic sponsor, Coca-Cola is making only a token gesture of support for the spirit of the Green Games. More than 90% of the Coke coolers at the Olympic site will rely on HFCs. Turning a cold shoulder to the green guidelines, the company will feature 1,700 coolers using HFC global-warming gases and only 100 eco-friendly Greenfreeze coolers. The Environmental Guidelines aren’t the only call to action that Coca-Cola is ignoring. In 1997, world leaders extended the United Nations Kyoto Protocol on Climate Change to call on industrialized countries to reduce HFC emissions. At its present rate of growth, the global market in HFCs will hit 1.35 million tonnes by 2040, or about 15% the current level of fossil fuel emissions. That would be a disaster. On average over 20 years, one tonne of HFCs causes 3,300 times more climate change destruction than one tonne of carbon dioxide, the most common fossil fuel gas. Coca-Cola can lead the world towards a cool green future. In 1994, the company recognized its environmental responsibility by phasing out refrigerators and vending machines that used CFCs and HCFCs, gases that damage the planet’s ozone layer. Unfortunately, the company shifted to HFCs, another chemical creation that has no future on a healthy planet Earth. With plans to double its business in the next 10 years, Coke must abandon its policy of using HFCs or be known as a brand that puts corporate profits ahead of the global environment. Coke has an alternative: Greenfreeze. Each year, 12 to 15 million cooling systems are manufactured that use no ozone-depleting or global-warming gases. These Greenfreeze refrigerators use small amounts of naturally occurring hyrdrocarbons such as propane and butane. Manufacturers have won “green business” awards and the European Union’s Ecolabel certification for this environmental advance. Greenfreeze is also available for commercial applications. A wide range of Greenfreeze systems are available to replace HFCs in freezer cabinets, soda machines and ice-cream coolers from the supermarket to the corner grocer. Right now, Greenfreeze technology is the best choice for safe, eco-friendly refrigeration. It’s the real thing – so where’s Coke?
