Hemp has been used to make paper for thousands of years — long before trees became the default. Here’s why that history matters, and what makes hemp a compelling alternative today.
The Problem with Recycled Paper
Recycled paper sounds like the eco-friendly choice, but the reality is more complicated. Most “recycled” paper still uses a mix of virgin tree fibres and recycled content — only 100% post-consumer paper avoids trees entirely.
The recycling process itself also has a waste problem. When paper is recycled, fibres are separated from the rest of the material, leaving behind a slurry called deinking sludge. This byproduct contains residues from printing inks, adhesives, and other materials. Depending on the process, sludge can represent a significant percentage of the input weight, creating ongoing disposal challenges.
And there’s a quality trade-off: recycled paper typically has shorter fibres than virgin paper, which means lower strength and reduced print quality.
A Brief History of Hemp Paper
The story of paper is largely the story of hemp. Archaeological evidence shows the earliest known paper — crude sheets made from hemp — dates to around 200 BCE in China. Around 105 CE, Cai Lun (also written Ts’ai Lun) refined and standardized the process using hemp waste, bark, and rags, which led to widespread adoption across China.
By the 8th century, Chinese papermaking techniques had spread to the Arab world — the first paper mill outside China was established in Baghdad. European papermaking emerged in the first half of the 16th century, and for centuries the raw material was almost entirely hemp and flax rags (worn-out clothing of the era). Virtually all paper in the Western world up through the
early 19th century came from these fibres.
Note: You may have seen claims that the Gutenberg Bible and the Declaration of Independence were printed on hemp paper. These are popular myths. The Gutenberg Bible was printed primarily on linen-fibre paper and vellum; the signed Declaration of Independence is written on parchment (animal skin). The drafts-on-hemp story lacks documentary evidence.
What changed everything was the Industrial Revolution. Faster printing presses created a demand for paper that rag supplies couldn’t meet — and that shortage pushed industry toward a new raw material: trees. Today, non-wood plant fibres (hemp, flax, cotton, sugarcane bagasse, straw, and others) account for roughly 5–10% of global paper pulp production. Hemp alone represents a tiny fraction of that figure, though interest in reviving it is growing.
Why Hemp Makes Sense for Paper
Compared to trees, hemp is a remarkably efficient crop:
- Reaches full maturity in 70–110 days, versus 20–80 years for most timber trees
- Grows 6–16 feet tall with minimal inputs
- Resists most pests and diseases — typically requires no pesticides, herbicides, or fungicides
- Can be grown without synthetic fertilizers; thrives with organic inputs
- Yields roughly 2–5 tonnes of dry stalk per acre
- Produces 3–4 times more usable fibre per hectare per year than forest land
- Hemp paper fibres are 4–5 times longer than wood pulp fibres, making paper that’s stronger and more durable
- Hemp paper can be recycled up to 8 times, compared to about 3 times for wood-pulp paper
- Leaves fields fertile and weed-free for the following crop
In 1916, USDA scientists Lyster Hoxie Dewey and Jason L. Merrill published research demonstrating that hemp could produce paper more economically and sustainably than wood pulp. That research was largely shelved as the timber and paper industries consolidated — but it’s worth noting that a U.S. government agency made the case for hemp paper over a century ago.
The main reason hemp paper isn’t mainstream today isn’t agronomic — it’s economic. Processing infrastructure for hemp fibre is underdeveloped, keeping production costs roughly four times higher than wood-pulp paper. As that infrastructure grows, so will hemp’s viability as a mainstream
alternative.
Hemp’s Other Uses
Paper is just one application. Industrial hemp is also used for:
- Textiles — durable clothing, canvas, rope
- Food and seeds — hemp seeds are a nutritionally dense whole food
- Fuel — hemp biomass can be converted to biofuel
- Building materials — hempcrete is gaining traction as an insulating construction material
- Medicine — CBD (cannabidiol) derived from hemp has FDA-approved applications for certain epilepsy conditions; research into other therapeutic uses is ongoing
