We’ve been told to spend time in nature for as long as anyone can remember, but the research base for why has solidified considerably in recent years. This isn’t wellness advice based on feeling—it’s a body of evidence from environmental psychology, physiology, and public health that consistently points in the same direction: regular contact with natural environments improves mental and physical health in measurable ways. Here’s what the science actually shows.
Stress Reduction: Fast and Measurable
The most-replicated finding in nature-and-health research is stress reduction, and it happens quickly. A 2010 Japanese study on shinrin-yoku (forest bathing) found that 15 minutes in a forested environment reduced cortisol by 12.4% and lowered blood pressure and heart rate significantly compared to the same time in an urban environment. A 2019 study in Frontiers in Psychology found that spending 20–30 minutes in a natural setting produced the largest cortisol reduction—effects peaked around that duration and didn’t continue growing with longer exposures.
The mechanism is partly explained by Attention Restoration Theory (Kaplan & Kaplan): natural environments engage effortless, involuntary attention (looking at moving water, listening to birds) rather than directed attention (driving, reading screens), allowing the directed attention system to recover. This is why you can come back from a walk in the woods feeling mentally clearer even when you weren’t consciously “relaxing.”
Mental Health: Depression and Anxiety
A meta-analysis of 25 studies published in Environmental Science & Technology found that exercising in natural environments (versus indoor exercise) showed greater improvements in self-esteem and mood, with the largest effects near water. A 2019 study in Scientific Reports found that people who spent at least 120 minutes per week in nature had significantly better health and wellbeing outcomes than those who spent no time—and the effect was relatively consistent across different types of natural environments (parks, coastlines, farmland).
The 120-minute weekly threshold is worth knowing: it’s roughly 17 minutes per day, or two focused 60-minute outdoor sessions per week. The research suggests this is a meaningful threshold, below which benefits were reduced and above which they continued but at a diminishing rate.
Physical Health: Immune Function
Forest environments specifically appear to have measurable effects on immune function. A series of studies by Qing Li at Nippon Medical School found that forest walks increased natural killer (NK) cell activity and number—these are the immune cells that identify and destroy virus-infected cells and some tumor cells. The effect persisted for more than a week after a two-day forest trip and appeared to be partly mediated by phytoncides (aromatic compounds emitted by trees) rather than just the exercise or stress reduction.
This isn’t a cancer cure or an immune system reset—it’s a modest but real effect with a plausible mechanism. Regular exposure to natural environments, particularly forested ones, seems to maintain baseline immune function better than consistently indoor environments.
Attention and Cognitive Function in Children
Children with ADHD show improved attention after time in natural settings compared to urban settings, in multiple studies. A 2004 study by Kuo and Taylor found that green outdoor settings produced greater improvement in attention compared to indoor and built outdoor settings. This effect has been replicated in several subsequent studies and is now influencing school design decisions in some districts.
More broadly, children who have regular unstructured outdoor play show better executive function, creativity, and social skills in longitudinal research. The “nature deficit disorder” framing popularized by Richard Louv is not a clinical diagnosis, but the underlying observation—that reduced contact with natural environments in childhood has measurable developmental costs—is supported by research.
How to Get the Dose
The research suggests you don’t need wilderness or a national park—urban parks, green spaces, and waterways produce many of the same effects, especially for stress and mood. What seems to matter is: actual exposure to natural elements (trees, grass, water, sky), some sensory engagement (not just passing through), and enough time for the autonomic nervous system to shift (roughly 20 minutes minimum).
Combining nature time with exercise amplifies both effects. Leaving the phone in your pocket maximizes the attention restoration benefit (the phone re-engages directed attention). And regularity matters more than intensity—a short walk in a local park most days is more beneficial than one long nature trip per month.
