Summer Insect Bites Bugging You?

By Meg BoredMom

Here are some natural ways to take the itch and sting out of those annoying bug bites!

  • Oatmeal – Oatmeal is a great option if you’ve been attacked by a cloud of mosquitoes. Simply mix oatmeal and water together to make a paste and then slather it all over the bite areas. Let it absorb into the skin for about 15 minutes or until it starts to dry. It’s not only soothing, but the drying process will help draw out toxins for instant itch relief.
  • Honey – Honey should not just be in your kitchen – keep a small bottle in your bathroom medicine cabinet as it has powerful antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. Dab some on insect stings, scrapes and heat rashes for calming relief and healing.
  • Ice – Ice is the common treatment to reduce swelling, pain, and inflammation. The cold helps numb your skin and bring down the puffiness. Apply crushed ice in a bag, wrap a thin dishtowel over it and place it on the skin for a few minutes at a time.
  • Baking Soda – Baking soda will help cleanse a bite and also provide instant relief.  Take plain baking soda and add a bit of water to create a paste and apply it to your skin. Let it rest there for about ten minutes before you wash it off.
  • Aloe vera – Aloe vera is an  easy-to-grow succulent that is in my homeowner’s yards, especially in the southwest as it’s drought resistant. If you don’t have an aloe plant in your yard, aloe gel available in almost any pharmacy is a great option for bug bites.   Aloe has anti-inflammatory properties and can prevent infections as well as ease the pain of minor wounds. Use a single dollop of gel from the plant to soothe irritated areas.
