How to Clean Up Your Shower: Filters, Shampoos, and What Matters

Your shower is one of the higher-exposure moments of your day. You’re in a small enclosed space with hot water, which opens pores, generates steam you’re inhaling, and delivers whatever’s in the water and your products directly to your skin and respiratory tract. A few targeted swaps can meaningfully reduce chemical exposure without turning your morning routine into a research project.

The Water: Shower Filters

Municipal water is treated with chlorine (or chloramine, a longer-lasting alternative) to kill pathogens. This is necessary and good for public health. The trade-off: chlorine reacts with organic matter in water to form disinfection byproducts (DBPs)—trihalomethanes and haloacetic acids—which are classified as probable carcinogens at high exposures. In a hot shower, chlorine and DBPs volatilize into steam and are inhaled.

A shower filter reduces chlorine content before the water reaches you. The best-tested types use KDF-55 (a redox media that converts chlorine to chloride) or vitamin C (ascorbic acid, which neutralizes chlorine and chloramine). KDF-55 doesn’t neutralize chloramine effectively; vitamin C does. If your utility uses chloramine (check your annual water quality report), a vitamin C filter or a combined KDF + vitamin C unit is more effective.

Reputable brands: Berkey Shower Filter (KDF), Jolie (KDF + calcium sulfite, with good design), Vitamin C shower tablets or filters from multiple brands for chloramine-treated water. Filters need replacement every 3–6 months depending on usage. Cost: $30–80 for the filter housing; $10–25 for replacements.

The caveat: shower filters are one layer of precaution, not a transformation of water quality. The health impact of chlorine exposure through showering is real but modest for healthy adults; it matters more for people with respiratory sensitivities, eczema, or other conditions where skin barrier or lung function is compromised.

Shampoo and Conditioner: Clean Formulations

The main things to avoid in hair products for daily use: synthetic fragrance (phthalates, undisclosed compounds), parabens (preservatives with estrogenic activity in research), and sulfates if your hair or scalp is dry or sensitive (sodium lauryl sulfate strips oil effectively but can be over-drying).

Shampoo bars: A solid shampoo bar eliminates the bottle, often has simpler ingredient lists, and lasts 2–3x longer than liquid. Ethique and HiBAR are the most consistently reviewed. Expect 2–3 weeks of transition as your scalp adjusts to different surfactant levels.

Liquid options: Acure Organics, ATTITUDE, and Briogeo Be Gentle, Be Kind all have fragrance-free or lightly scented options with cleaner formulations. Check EWG’s Skin Deep database for the specific product—within any brand, formulations vary.

Body Wash and Soap

Bar soap is generally lower chemical complexity than body wash and produces no plastic bottle waste. Options range from Dr. Bronner’s (castile-based, widely available, clean ingredient list) to locally made handcraft soaps using saponified oils. For the cleanest formulation, look for soaps with a short ingredient list of oils + lye (sodium hydroxide)—that’s all soap needs to be.

If you prefer liquid body wash: Everyone 3-in-1 and Puracy Natural Body Wash are affordable, fragrance-free options with cleaner formulation profiles. Refillable formats (some brands offer pouches or refill station partnerships) reduce plastic.

The Lymphatic Brushing Question

Dry brushing (using a natural bristle brush on dry skin before showering) is a popular wellness practice promoted for lymphatic drainage. The honest evidence: the lymphatic system does respond to movement and physical stimulation, but it primarily drains through muscle contraction during exercise and deep breathing—not skin brushing. Dry brushing does exfoliate and improve circulation in the skin, which is real and pleasant, but the “detox” claims are overstated. If you enjoy it, it’s harmless; just don’t treat it as a substitute for the other changes in this article.

Temperature and Time

Hot, long showers maximize chemical exposure (more steam, more time) and strip more of the skin’s natural oil barrier. Lukewarm water and shorter showers (5–10 minutes) reduce both. If you’re specifically concerned about respiratory exposure to DBPs in steam, showering with good ventilation (fan on, window cracked) reduces the concentration of volatile compounds in the shower air.
